POSTIES ASSISTING WITH DOMESTIC SERVICES IN EUROPE

Posted on:

Due to underworked postal services around Europe a few countries are now offering postie domestic services ranging from mowing lawns to looking out for elderly customers.  Some opposition has been encountered from professionals eager to protect their trades.

In Finland Posti, the state mail service is offering on their lightest letter day – Tuesdays, grass-cutting sessions in the summer months and delivering meal services.  Whilst in France, La Poste is about to offer a service called “Watch over my parents” where postal workers will call on elderly people to check they are ok.  By signing up to La Poste customers will be reassured that a Postman is dropping in at agreed times during the week, to check on elderly relatives.

Will the UK follow suit, is this an additional service which could supplement the Royal Mail services?  This is happening and has always happened in some communities, especially remote areas with Postmen checking in on and doing the odd job for our elderly and vulnerable population.

COLD CALLERS TO FACE FINES FROM NEXT MONTH

Posted on:

Baroness Neville-Rolfe, the minster responsible for data protection has stated that from next month cold callers will face fines for withholding their telephone numbers. It will become law from May 16th and marketing companies that breach the rules will face fines of up to £2 million from Ofcom, the telephone regulator and a further £500.000 from the Information Commissioner, the data watch dog.

It is hoped this will stop the intrusive and nuisance calls to elderly and vulnerable members of society in their own homes.  The compulsory caller ID will help consumers complain and track down companies that break this new rule of withholding caller ID. Hopefully this will also help to keep down the cost of car insurance which is sometimes fuelled by lawyers chasing people involved in accidents encouraging them to claim huge amounts of money.

HISTORIC LETTERS WANTED BY ROYAL MAIL FOR 500th ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION

Posted on:

The Royal Mail is seeking historic letters and postcards for an exhibition to celebrate their 500th anniversary this year of the postal service.  After a member of staff found a letter from her grandfather describing the start of the Battle of Jutland, when he served on board HMS Iron Duke the idea was created.  Historian Lucy Worsley who is reading all the letters is looking for more personal stories instead of legal documents portraying people’s emotions about the great issues of their day. Head of public affairs for The Royal Mail, David Gold stated that the project was to build an interesting picture of what life was really like!
