Royal Mail innovations
The Royal Mail have created a new postage barcode for the NHS to use when posting out “appointment letters”. This unique barcode will enable the Royal Mail to prioritise these letters irrespective of disruptions to service, to avoid delays in patients receiving these time sensitive/critical communications.
The Royal Mail are rolling out upgrades to existing post boxes. There will be a slot for letters and another larger one for parcels. The “parcel slot “will open when the sender scans the label barcode and provide a proof of posting (which will be powered by solar panels and will be rolled out across the entire nationwide network of post boxes). Initially there will be a pilot scheme of five locations. The last major post box innovation happened in the 1870’s when the green post boxes were painted red to improve their visibility.
Denmark postal service to stop delivering letters
The state-run postal service provider PostNord in Denmark will end letter deliveries at the end of 2025. Letter posting volumes have declined 90% since 2000 – letter numbers declining from 1.4 billion to 110 million letters annually. These declines have been mirrored across Europe.
Denmark is one of the most “digitised” companies in Europe, thus avoiding the need to post banking statements and local authority communications, with 95% of the population using the Digital Post service. Yet older people are still reliant on physical, postal mail, which will be increasingly more expensive as the numbers have declined.
Denmark’s state-owned postal provider will concentrate on the delivery of parcels, leaving the letter post to private operators following the Postal Act in 2024.
It is clearly evident that the Royal Mail proposed changes are vital to ensure we have a reliable and affordable universal postal service across the country.

Protecting the Royal Mail for the future
Whilst OFCOM, in conjunction with the Royal Mail, finalise the way forward to both protect the Royal Mail and ensure we have a service everybody wants and can afford, it’s worth reflecting on today’s environment.
The number of postal addresses has increased from 28 million to 32 million since 2008.
The volume of letters posted has reduced by almost 70 per cent in the last 20 years, from 20 billion letters annually to a forecast of 4 billion in the next few years.
63 per cent of post is bulk from large institutions.
The Royal Mail revenue from letter posting has reduced by 50 per cent in this corresponding period.
To ensure a sustainable Royal Mail service delivery nationwide for the future, it has proposed first-class letters will be delivered six days a week (90% delivery target for next day) and second-class delivered on an alternate day service, excluding Saturdays (95% delivery target for delivery within three days).
The Royal Mail currently provides a very cost-effective service for bulk mailings, which enables businesses to deliver impactful communications through the post (with digital fatigue, there is an enormous window for creativity and longevity of print based direct marketing). Yes Response believes the Royal Mail must deliver a reliable and affordable service. We cannot allow a poorer performance to prevail with a higher cost. OFCOM will publish its decisions this summer.
